Bringing the Landscape Inside

Tired of crowded city living, a client commissioned FMX Interior Design founder Xu Fu-Min to create a countryside home that embraces the tranquility of nature.

The resulting 390 sq. meter residence, “returning hut” uses materials that reflect the composition and color of rocks and trees on its hillside location outside Xiamen, China.

The two-story house features bluestone, slate and solid wood walls and flooring with minimal decoration. Abundant glass outer walls invite the outdoors in, visually opening the bedrooms, bathroom and high ceilinged living room to their natural surroundings. Glass walls also organize and divide the space within.

Bordering the master bath is a boulder appearing as though the house was built around it, leaving it untouched. “It’s important to preserve and apply natural mountains, rocks and trees to the largest extent possible, so that accidentalness and inevitability will merge into one,” writes Fu-Min for gooood. “The designer should forget about the design and even return to a state of void.”
