BBK Kuna in Bilbao: An Architectural Renaissance with Airclos's Signature
Airclos Drives Sustainability at the House of Sustainable Development Goals with an Innovative Movable Roof
Airclos played a pivotal role in the renovation project of the BBK Kuna building in Bilbao, now home to the House of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This emblematic five-story building, inaugurated on October 25, 2021, serves not only as a hub for global sustainability but also showcases Airclos's commitment to innovation and energy efficiency.
This project, supported by 83 entities in line with the goals set by the UN in 2015 under the 2030 Agenda, was attended by notable figures such as Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu, the Provincial Deputy of Bizkaia, Unai Rementeria, and the Mayor of Bilbao, Juan Mari Aburto, among others.
- A Building with History and Modernity
Originally known as "Casa Cuna" de San Antonio, BBK Kuna is located in the Bilbao La Vieja neighborhood. The building's modernist design with Neo-Mudejar touches combines stone, brick, and ceramic with a rich color palette. A sculptural group titled La Caridad, created by Federico Sáenz Venturini in 1914, stands out on its main facade.
Initially intended for child care and later as a preschool for the BBK Foundation until 2018, the building now aims to foster innovative ideas in the social sphere under the new name BBK Kuna.
- Airclos's Commitment to Sustainability
In the architectural design of the project, led by AV Arquitectura (Alonso Varona Arquitectura), heritage respect and sustainability have been prioritized. The holistic approach not only improves energy efficiency but also optimizes the emotional and physical well-being of visitors and workers through natural light and the integration of biophilic elements like the green wall.
- Airclos Innovation: A Movable Roof that Connects with the World
Airclos has installed a glass movable roof on the building's roof that not only preserves the historical aesthetic but introduces a bright and surprising modern element. This feature allows for celebrations and events in a central illuminated space, symbolizing BBK Kuna's openness to great global ideas.
The Airclos roof combines a central movable part with two fixed ends, using smart SNX 60 glass that ensures maximum solar control and thermal insulation. This design not only stands out for its transparency and insulation capabilities but also for its ability to cover large spaces, like the 3m wide glass used in this project, optimizing natural light entry and improving the building's energy efficiency.
