Swann Building - University of Edinburgh

The transformation at the Swann Building – University of Edinburgh

The Swann Building at the University of Edinburgh was named after the molecular and cell biologist Michael Swann. Initially, he was a Professor of Natural History and later he became the Principal and Vice Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh.

The building has the largest lecture theatre on campus, with a total capacity of 371 students. The building is also used for research by the academic staff and provides students with teaching rooms on the top floor with great views of Edinburgh city.

Seating Configuration

This year 2024, the University decided to invest in the renovation of the lecture theatre and Ferco was chosen for this purpose. We have installed a total of 371 FT8 Wrimatic seats. This decision was influenced by positive feedback from similar installations at the Aberystwyth University and the University of St Andrews in Scotland, where the FT8 demonstrated excellent durability and comfort, with maximum compactness.

In the last row, 3 pairs of Removable FT8 seats with K-Roll System, Ferco’s patented movable seating system, with adjustable height Wrimatic tablets with gas lift, ensure inclusivity within the room.

Wrimatic™ tablet

The integrated A3 Wrimatic™ tablet is the most robust tablet on the market having been tested to a load bearing of 240KG. It stows neatly when not in use and operates in one continuous opening movement thanks to its unique triangular joint; a feature designed using advanced aeronautical and engineering technology.

Key Benefits Achieved for the Client

Enhanced Learning Environment: The new lecture theatre provides a comfortable and engaging space for students, facilitating better learning outcomes.

Functional and Durable Seating: The FT8 Wrimatic seats offer robust, long-lasting performance, ensuring the lecture theatre remains a premier educational space for years to come.

Inclusivity: The adjustable height Wrimatic tablets with gas lift, along with the implementation of the removable seats, ensure inclusivity for people with reduced mobility within the lecture theatre.

Enhanced aesthetics: The refreshed look has utilised the upholstery Camira Main Line Flax, a blend of pure wool and harvested flax, in a combination of 4 autumn tones.

Such is the confidence of the University of Edinburgh that this was the first of two commissions, the next, Appleton Tower Auditorium 4 & 5, are set for later this year.
