Unopiù: DAVOS

Design by Matteo Nunziati

Unopiù presents the Davos collection, the result of the collaboration with designer Matteo Nunziati, a seating system with infinitely modular elements, created for use seamlessly between the inside and outside, thanks to upholstery and fabrics that rep-licate the comfort and softness of indoor furniture.

As Matteo Nunziati explains: "Looking at human reality, two main factors emerge: functionality, which is measurable and subject to deterioration, and a more existential dimension, imbued with concepts such as beauty and happiness. The Davos seating system is a synthesis of these two aspects, providing a combination of practicality and emotion”.

Starting with a reflection on functionality, the designer has created a modular structure that intuitively accommodates the soft part of the sofa, inspired by a child's game with magnetic balls that connect linear elements. The structure is lightweight and easy to assemble in order to meet practical requirements, while its modularity enables it to be configured in a wide range of diverse ways, making it the ideal option for interior designers who can interpret different spaces in a personal and creative way.

The name is a tribute to the Swiss town at the centre of the Walser population, which has influenced the design of the collection. The aesthetics of the Davos seating system draw inspiration from the rural architecture of local houses. In particular, the joints designed for the aluminium structure echo those made of wood which are typical of historic buildings in this mountainous setting, with their right-angle shape.

The Davos design process started from a small scale to define the details, resulting in a complex and distinctive structure. The joints between the various aluminium elements involve highly sophisticated welding and processing. Changing in scale from the smallest to the largest component, the elements in this system, including the central part, the two corners and the chaise longue, as well as the tables and armchairs, can be combined to adapt to different spaces, from small terraces, to penthouses and larger gardens.

The Davos seating system also fits in perfectly with a key trend in contemporary living, the continuity between indoors and outdoors. Davos has the typical features of an outdoor product, but thanks to the fabrics selected and the soft and comfortable upholstery, it can create a strong link with the interior.

"Unopiù has invented outdoor living, in the sense that in 1978 it was the first to believe in furniture elements that could be placed outside. There is often a tendency to adapt interior products to the outdoors, whereas working with a company like Unopiù has helped me to alter my perspective. So the idea is to design an outdoor product that would actually relate to the interior,' says designer Matteo Nunziati.

Davos provides multiple elements, such as modular sofas, chaise longues, armachairs and coffee tables, which can be freely combined to integrate with different environments, turning into a product that is constantly new and different with respect to the spaces it interprets.
