Vertical Garden in Hospital Quirón Sagrado Corazón Sevilla
Urban Therapy has collaborated with the architects José Manuel Peinado and Ignacio Quijano from the Peinado Arquitectos studio , developing a vertical garden project for the Quirón Sagrado Corazón Hospital in Seville , measuring 40 m 2 included in its Basic and Execution project for its expansion .
This vertical garden in a hospital is the first vertical garden installed in a hospital center in Europe.
The vertical garden in the hospital is developed on the ground floor on the left party wall of the enlarged complex, being visible from the main access hall and assuming a major role within the main circulation of users through the new wing. The project was written during February-March 2011 and has been executed during the last weeks of August 2012, concluding on August 31, 2012.
The vertical garden in the hospital has dimensions of 17.00 m x 2.20 m high and is made up of more than 1,400 plants selected from more than 40 plant species. The design is inspired by a garden by the landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx , called “Suspended Garden” and located in the Ministry of Education and Public Health in Brazil, a landmark of modern architecture of the 1930s and designed by Le Corbusier. The peculiarity of this garden is that Burle Marx designed it to be viewed from an upper floor of the building.
Inspired by this design, we have created the design of the new vertical garden of the clinic, conveniently studying the transposition of colors to local species, depending on the climatic conditions and sunlight of the place.
With this chromatic composition, the final step is to develop the planting module by module from planting schemes where the species to be used are indicated.
The peculiarity of this vertical garden in a hospital lies in its advanced and sophisticated operation, management and control, developed together with our partner Idener , a technology-based company from the University of Seville.
The vertical garden is irrigated by means of a drip irrigation system integrated into the Fytotextile ® fabric substrates patented by Urban Therapy. Irrigation is carried out in a closed circuit, so the excess water from each irrigation is collected in trays located in the lower part of the garden and taken to a technical room where it is purified and filtered, while nutrients are added. in liquid form. Once this entire process has been completed, the system pumps the irrigation back to the vertical garden.
The entire process is remotely controlled by an industrial PLC that receives information from various Temperature, Humidity and PH probes arranged in the garden and in the tanks to control both physical and environmental conditions that can affect the operation and survival of the Vertical Garden. The monitoring of the correct operation is carried out through remote access via the Internet, so that at all times our technicians have information and measurements in real time of what is happening.
